A gallery has to make a choice at ESTE ARTE. Its presentation focuses on a single artist, giving visitors the chance to follow a body of work rather than collecting isolated impressions. The thirteenth edition takes place at Pavilion VIK in José Ignacio, Uruguay, with public access on 6–8 January 2027 and an invitation-only preview on 5 January.

This is a particularly worthwhile South American January destination for readers interested in how galleries from the region introduce their artists internationally. The evening hours allow for a substantial visit after daytime gallery appointments. They also make it possible to return to a presentation on another day: the published admission covers all three public dates.

The announced gallery presentations include Del Infinito with Mariela Vita, Almeida & Dale with Henrique Oliveira, OTTO Galería with Fernando Maza, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff with Miriam Cahn, and Black Gallery with Pati Fernández Graña. Other announced pairings include Galería del Paseo with Ishmael Randall-Weeks, Piero Atchugarry Gallery with Chris Soal, and Xippas with Carlos Amorales. These names describe the announced 2027 programme, rather than an assumed return of the 2026 roster.

The ESTE FOCUS schedule provides another way into the selection. On 6 January, the listed walkthroughs move from Vita at 18:10 to Oliveira at 18:50 and Maza at 19:30. Oliveira’s session is in English, while several others are in Spanish without translation. Readers who want a conversation they can follow should use the language information as well as the artist’s name when choosing a session.

ESTE ARTE 2027 Event Overview

ESTE ARTE 2027: Dates, Tickets & Visitor Guide

Dates:

6 January 2027 - 8 January 2027

Location:

Pavilion VIK, Ruta 10, kilometre 182.5, José Ignacio, Maldonado, Uruguay. This is the José Ignacio venue, distinct from the convention centre used by another January fair in Punta del Este. Keep the venue name and kilometre marker together when arranging transport.

Mission:

ESTE ARTE operates as a nonprofit cultural platform based in Uruguay and focused on exchange across the Americas. Its fair brings gallery programs directly to the public, alongside discussions and professional activities. The focused presentation format gives this ambition a practical shape: each gallery must explain why one artist deserves sustained attention.

Organizer:

ESTE ARTE, directed by Laura Bardier. The organisation’s activities extend beyond the annual fair into cultural exchange, learning and professional development.

Why attend to ESTE ARTE 2027?

The single-artist format makes comparison more demanding and more rewarding. A gallery cannot rely on a crowded wall of unrelated recognizable names. Look at how several works establish a method, a visual vocabulary, or a change of direction. The presentation becomes persuasive when its arrangement reveals something an isolated reproduction cannot.

The geographical mix also matters. A São Paulo gallery and a Buenos Aires gallery may share an audience without presenting the same account of contemporary art. Follow those differences through the objects themselves. The useful discovery is an artist with a particular way of working, rather than a supposedly representative South American style.

Ticket Information

General admission costs

The published early bird price is USD 35, available until 5 January; the regular price is USD 40 from 6 January. Admission covers 6, 7, and 8 January. The organiser also offers a 10% promotional discount; eligibility and availability should be reconfirmed when the enquiry is processed. Use the enquiry form on this page to request admission information for your planned visit.

Getting There:

Travellers can arrive via Montevideo’s Carrasco airport or Punta del Este airport at Laguna del Sauce, then arrange onward travel to José Ignacio. Consider the entire journey rather than treating arrival in Uruguay as arrival at the fair. For an evening departure, arrange the return transfer before entering; the published closing time is 22:00.

The two fairs of the coastal season are separate journeys. MART Punta 2027, held 7–9 January at Punta del Este’s convention centre, offers a direct-artist format that allows a meaningful comparison with ESTE ARTE’s gallery-led solo presentations. They overlap on 7–8 January, enabling a combined stay if their final session times fit the transfer schedule.

Accommodation

José Ignacio is the practical choice for visitors returning to the pavilion on several evenings. A base closer to Punta del Este may suit a visit split between the two fairs. Our art fairs in January 2027 calendar places Uruguay’s dates alongside the later international January programme, helping distinguish one regional stay from a much larger series of journeys.

History & Context of a ESTE ARTE 2027

The previous edition took place on 4–7 January 2026, with its public opening on 5 January. Look back at ESTE ARTE 2026 for the preceding fair. The year matters when following a gallery: Almeida & Dale’s 2026 presentation featured Vanderlei Lopes, while the 2027 programme identifies Henrique Oliveira. A returning gallery does not mean a repeated exhibition.

What Has Changed Since 2026

The edition moves forward by one day in the January calendar and introduces a different set of artist presentations. Del Infinito, for example, moves from Leo Batistelli in the 2026 archive to Mariela Vita in the 2027 walkthrough programme. The continuity lies in the concentrated format; the artistic argument changes with the selection.

Interesting Fact

ESTE FOCUS makes language part of the visitor’s route. The 2027 schedule identifies the Richard Zinon walkthrough with Cadogan Gallery on 7 January as an English-language session, while the following Chris Soal session is listed in Spanish. Both specify that no translation is provided. A familiar artist’s name therefore does not guarantee the same kind of access to the discussion.

This is a useful reminder that international art is encountered through particular people and languages. The works remain available to everyone, but a conversation can open a different layer of understanding. Read the session information before choosing which presentation deserves a longer stop.

Tips for Visitors of ESTE ARTE 2027

Use the first visit to identify two or three presentations, then return using the admission’s multi-day access. Ask what connects the works chosen for the stand and whether the group was developed specifically for this presentation. Keep the artist, title, and gallery together in your notes.

Tips from the ArtExpoWorld

At a solo stand, compare the least immediately attractive work with the one that first caught your eye. An awkward transition, a change of material, or a quieter image may explain the artist’s decisions better than the most easily photographed piece. A gallery should be able to explain the selection through the works in front of you.

Editor’s Note

ESTE ARTE’s strongest proposition is the responsibility it places on a gallery. Choosing one artist requires an argument about a practice, rather than a collection designed to attract various types of buyers. We value the format because it can make an unfamiliar body of work understandable without reducing it to a single signature image.

The 2027 pairings invite a particularly interesting comparison between regional and international gallery networks. Their value will lie in the precision of each presentation: how a surface is treated, how works occupy space, and what a sequence reveals about the artist. A coastal setting is enjoyable, but it cannot provide that artistic substance on the gallery’s behalf.

We recommend the fair to readers prepared to closely investigate a small number of artists. Its scale becomes an advantage when a second encounter changes the first judgment. The admission’s three-day validity supports exactly that kind of visit, making the concentrated format more than a curatorial promise.
