One of São Paulo’s most ambitious media-art projects of the 2026/2027 season places Nam June Paik, the legendary pioneer of video art, in dialogue with a new generation of artists. Presented at Pina

Contemporânea, the second chapter of Hyundai Translocal Series: VIA SATÉLITE opens on November 28, 2026 and remains on view until March 28, 2027.

Rather than presenting Paik simply as a historical figure, the exhibition treats his work as a living point of departure. His experiments with television, communication technologies, performance and global networks are reconsidered through the practices of biarritzzz, Christine Sun Kim, Jane Jin Kaisen and Vivian Caccuri.

The result is a show about technology, but also about much more than technology: language, cultural exchange, memory, sound, bodies and the ways information moves between people and places.

VIA SATÉLITE is developed in collaboration with the Nam June Paik Art Center and Hyundai Motor as part of the Hyundai Translocal Series. At Pina Contemporânea, the project unfolds in more than one stage, creating an extended conversation around Paik’s artistic legacy.

The exhibition in the Grande Galeria brings Paik into dialogue with four contemporary artists whose practices explore communication from very different perspectives. Newly commissioned works by biarritzzz, Christine Sun Kim and Jane Jin Kaisen expand the project beyond the traditional retrospective format.

Visitors can expect an exhibition shaped by moving images, sound, technological systems and conceptual connections rather than a conventional chronological survey.

Nam June Paik transformed television from a passive domestic object into an artistic material. Decades before digital culture became part of everyday life, he was already questioning how electronic images would change communication, geography and human relationships. VIA SATÉLITE demonstrates why those questions remain urgent in the age of permanent connectivity.

Hyundai Translocal Series: VIA SATÉLITE 2026/2027 Event Overview

Hyundai Translocal Series: VIA SATÉLITE 2026/2027 – Nam June Paik in São Paulo

Nam June Paik was thinking about global electronic communication decades before the internet became part of everyday life. His work repeatedly envisioned a world where images, information, and cultures could circulate almost instantly across vast distances. What once seemed futuristic now resembles the environment in which most of us live every day.

Dates:

28 November 2026 - 28 March 2027

Location:

São Paulo, Brazil

Mission:

The mission of the exhibition is to examine Paik’s legacy not as something fixed in the twentieth century, but as a platform for new artistic responses. Its central themes — media, transcultural dialogue and memory — connect directly with the conditions of contemporary life. Information crosses borders instantly, identities are shaped simultaneously by physical and digital spaces, and technology increasingly determines how experiences are recorded and remembered. By bringing artists from different backgrounds into this conversation, the project also expands the historical narrative of media art beyond a single geography.

Organizer:

The exhibition is presented by Pinacoteca de São Paulo in collaboration with the Nam June Paik Art Center and Hyundai Motor as part of the Hyundai Translocal Series. Curatorial direction is by Ana Maria Maia and Ana Paula Lopes.

Why attend to Hyundai Translocal Series: VIA SATÉLITE 2026/2027?

The exhibition offers a rare opportunity in Brazil to encounter Nam June Paik within an expanded contemporary context.

For visitors familiar with Paik, the show provides a new way of considering his influence. For those discovering him for the first time, it offers an accessible entry into one of the most important transformations in postwar art: the moment electronic media became a serious artistic language.

The contemporary artists add another level to the experience. Their works bring questions of sound, language, identity, cultural displacement and memory into a conversation that moves beyond technology itself.

This makes VIA SATÉLITE particularly relevant for visitors interested in contemporary art, video art, digital culture, experimental sound and the history of communication.

History & Context of a Hyundai Translocal Series: VIA SATÉLITE 2026/2027

Nam June Paik is widely regarded as one of the founders of video art. Born in Seoul in 1932, he developed an international career across Asia, Europe, and the United States and became known for treating televisions, cameras, electronic signals, and broadcast systems as artistic media.

His work anticipated many aspects of today’s connected world.

Paik imagined communication networks capable of linking cultures and continents long before video calls, social platforms, and continuous digital broadcasting became ordinary.

Pina Contemporânea provides an especially appropriate setting for revisiting that legacy. As the newest major building of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, it has become an important platform for large-scale contemporary projects and experimental exhibition formats.

The dialogue with biarritzzz, Christine Sun Kim, Jane Jin Kaisen, and Vivian Caccuri prevents the exhibition from turning into a purely historical celebration. Instead, different generations meet around questions that Paik helped introduce but could never have seen fully unfold.

Tips for Visitors of Hyundai Translocal Series: VIA SATÉLITE 2026/2027

Allow at least 90 minutes for the exhibition, especially if you want to spend time with video and sound-based works.

Media installations often reward slower viewing. Instead of trying to see every work quickly, choose several pieces and stay with them long enough to understand how image, sound, and space interact.

Visitors interested in Nam June Paik should also check whether the related first chapter of the project remains accessible during their dates in São Paulo, as the two parts were conceived as connected exhibitions.

Weekday mornings are generally the best option for a quieter experience.

Tips from the ArtExpoWorld

Do not approach VIA SATÉLITE as a traditional retrospective where the objective is simply to understand Nam June Paik’s career from beginning to end.

The stronger experience comes from looking for connections: how one artist uses sound, how another works with moving images, how language changes across cultures, and how an idea developed decades ago can suddenly feel completely contemporary.

It is also worth leaving time to explore the architecture and public spaces of Pina Contemporânea itself.

Editor’s Note

VIA SATÉLITE is valuable precisely because it avoids turning a major historical artist into a museum monument.

By placing Nam June Paik in direct conversation with biarritzzz, Christine Sun Kim, Jane Jin Kaisen and Vivian Caccuri, the Pinacoteca presents artistic influence as something active, unstable and continually rewritten.

For ArtExpoWorld, this is one of the exhibition’s strongest qualities. Paik’s importance does not depend only on what he created in the twentieth century. It can also be measured by how naturally his questions about media, communication and cultural exchange continue to generate new art today.

For visitors to São Paulo during the first months of 2027, VIA SATÉLITE deserves a place on the city’s contemporary-art itinerary.
