Interior Weather 2026/2027

Interior Weather is a long-running exhibition presented throughout Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, in Cape Town from 11 June 2026 to 28 February 2027.

Organised in collaboration with Norval Foundation and curated by Carmen Joubert, the exhibition brings modern and contemporary African art into the lounges, corridors, salons, and patios of one of Cape Town’s most historic hotels.

Instead of placing artworks inside a conventional white-cube gallery, Interior Weather integrates them into spaces already defined by architecture, furniture, light, and daily movement.

The exhibition examines how colour, material, and texture can influence atmosphere, memory, and emotion.

Works by contemporary artists are presented alongside historical material, creating conversations across approximately six decades of artistic practice.

Participating artists include Jan-Henri Booyens, Virginia Chihota, Kate Gottgens, Georgina Gratrix, Nicholas Hlobo, Dada Khanyisa, Eddy Kamuanga Illunga, Wole Lagunju, DuduBloom More, Cassi Namoda, Ephraim Ngatane, Jody Paulsen, Aviwe Plaatjie, and Themba Siwela.

Mission:

The mission of Interior Weather is to explore how art changes the emotional experience of interior space. Rather than asking visitors to separate the artwork from its surroundings, the exhibition encourages them to consider architecture, colour, furniture, and art as part of one atmosphere. The project also expands Norval Foundation’s engagement with audiences beyond its own museum building. Placing works inside a historic hotel introduces modern and contemporary African art to people who may not have planned a museum visit. This creates new encounters between art and daily life. The exhibition also challenges the idea that a serious exhibition requires neutral walls. Context can change meaning. A painting seen inside a domestic-feeling salon can create a different response from the same painting inside a formal gallery. Interior Weather uses that difference intentionally.

Norval Foundation is dedicated to modern and contemporary art from Africa and the diaspora.
