Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy arrives at Centro Cultural La Moneda in Santiago from 12 November 2026 to 28 March 2027.

The exhibition surveys more than three decades of work by Mexican artist Damián Ortega, one of the most internationally recognised artists of his generation.

Ortega is known for dismantling familiar objects and reconstructing them as sculptural systems.

Cars, motorcycles, tools, bricks, stones and industrial materials can appear suspended, separated or reorganised into spatial diagrams.

One of his best-known works, Cosmic Thing from 2002, transforms a Volkswagen Beetle by separating its components and suspending them in space.

The result resembles both an exploded engineering diagram and a constellation.

Matter and Energy examines these transformations through sculpture, photography, video and installation.

For ArtExpoWorld readers, the Santiago presentation offers an opportunity to experience one of Latin America’s most important contemporary sculptors through a substantial survey of his career.

Matter and Energy brings together more than thirty years of Damián Ortega’s artistic production.

The project was first presented at MASP in São Paulo before traveling to Centro Cultural La Moneda in Santiago.

The South American survey includes approximately 35 works spanning several media.

Large sculptural installations form the center of the exhibition.

Ortega frequently begins with objects that are ordinary, functional, and culturally familiar.

He then dismantles or reorganizes them.

A vehicle becomes a suspended system of individual components.

Tools can become part of a larger spatial structure.

Concrete, bricks, and corn can be transformed into sculptures that investigate physical forces and social systems simultaneously.

Photography and video expand these investigations into architecture, time, and urban space.

The exhibition moves constantly between the microscopic and the monumental.

An object can be understood as both physical matter and evidence of labor, industry, consumption, or economic organization.

Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy 2026/2027 Event Overview

Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy 2026/2027 – Contemporary Sculpture in Santiago

In Cosmic Thing, Ortega completely dismantled a Volkswagen Beetle and suspended its individual parts in space. The car was once one of the most familiar symbols of industrial modernity in both Mexico and Brazil. After Ortega takes it apart, it becomes something closer to a diagram, constellation, and archaeological specimen at the same time.

Dates:

12 November 2026 - 28 March 2027

Location:

Centro Cultural La Moneda, Santiago, Chile

Mission:

The mission of Matter and Energy is to encourage visitors to reconsider ordinary objects and the systems hidden inside them. Ortega treats sculpture as a relationship between force, resistance, balance, and gravity. His work often resembles engineering, but the engineering is deliberately playful and unstable. Objects are taken apart so their internal logic becomes visible. At the same time, dismantling changes their social meaning. A car is not only a machine. It is also labor, industry, consumption, mobility, status, and cultural history. A brick can be architecture, material, weight, and economic unit. Ortega uses these transformations to connect physical processes with social structures. The exhibition therefore operates on several levels at once. It can be experienced formally as sculpture while also raising questions about how contemporary material life is organized.

Organizer:

Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy was developed as a major South American survey of the artist’s work. The project was organised through collaboration involving MASP and regional institutional partners. The exhibition is curated by Adriano Pedrosa, Rodrigo Moura, Yudi Rafael and Isabela Ferreira Loures. The Santiago presentation is hosted by Centro Cultural La Moneda. The project brings major loans, historical works and archival material together to examine Ortega’s artistic development across more than three decades. Its presentation in both Brazil and Chile gives the survey a specifically South American institutional context.

Why attend to Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy 2026/2027?

The exhibition is worth visiting because Ortega’s work relies heavily on physical space.

Photographs can show what a sculpture looks like, but they cannot replicate the experience of walking around and beneath a suspended installation.

For sculpture enthusiasts, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of one of the medium’s most inventive contemporary practitioners.

For architects and designers, Ortega’s relationship with structure, material, and engineering provides a new perspective on objects.

For visitors interested in Latin American art, the exhibition links contemporary Mexican practice with broader histories of industry and modernization across the region.

For students, it shows how ordinary objects can become the foundation for complex conceptual work.

For cultural travelers, Centro Cultural La Moneda situates the exhibition directly beneath Santiago’s civic center, allowing art, architecture, and national history to share the same urban space.

History & Context of a Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy 2026/2027

Damián Ortega was born in Mexico City in 1967.

He emerged within a generation of Mexican artists whose practices gained increasing international attention during the 1990s.

Rather than following a single conventional medium, Ortega developed work across sculpture, installation, photography, and video.

His approach often begins with everyday objects.

This places him within a broader history of artists who questioned the separation between fine art and ordinary material culture.

However, Ortega’s work also reflects specifically Latin American histories of industrialization, labor, and consumer objects.

The Volkswagen Beetle is a particularly important example.

The model became enormously popular in both Mexico and Brazil.

In Cosmic Thing, Ortega turns that familiar industrial object into a suspended constellation of parts.

The object remains recognizable while becoming completely unusable.

Matter and Energy is the artist’s first major survey exhibition in South America.

Its journey from São Paulo to Santiago creates an additional regional context for understanding his work.

Tips for Visitors of Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy 2026/2027

Allow at least 90 minutes for the exhibition.

Walk around the sculptures rather than viewing them from only one angle.

Spatial relationships are central to Ortega’s work.

Look closely at the individual components inside dismantled objects.

Ask what each object was originally designed to do before considering what the artist has transformed it into.

Do not overlook the photographs and videos.

They expand the exhibition beyond a sculptural spectacle.

Check the Centro Cultural La Moneda programme for guided visits and talks.

The institution often offers mediation activities that can help explain unfamiliar contemporary practices.

Tips from the ArtExpoWorld

Do not stop at Cosmic Thing simply because it is the famous work.

The exhibition becomes more interesting when you notice the same logic appearing in less spectacular objects.

Ortega keeps asking one question in different ways: what happens when the systems holding everyday life together are taken apart?

That question is bigger than any Volkswagen.

Editor’s Note

Damián Ortega: Matter and Energy matters because ordinary objects are rarely ordinary once we look at the systems behind them.

For ArtExpoWorld, Ortega’s strength is his ability to make conceptual art physically understandable.

You do not need a theoretical manual to recognize a car that has been exploded into space.

But the longer you look, the more complicated that simple visual trick becomes.

Labor, industry, gravity, consumption, and politics begin to appear inside the object.

That is why Matter and Energy works so well as a survey: it reveals how Ortega has spent decades dismantling things in order to show what was holding them together.
