The Venice Architecture Biennale returns in 2027 with a direct instruction rather than an abstract slogan: Do Architecture.

Curated by architects Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, the 20th International Architecture Exhibition will take place from May 8 to November 21, 2027 across the Giardini, Arsenale and additional venues throughout Venice.

Its full title — Do Architecture — For the Possibility of Coexistence Facing a Real Reality — signals an edition focused less on architecture as image and more on architecture as a physical, social and environmental act.

Materials, craftsmanship, land, local knowledge, climate and the relationship between human construction and natural systems sit at the heart of the curatorial concept.

For visitors, the exhibition offers not only a survey of architectural thinking but an opportunity to see how different countries and practitioners respond to some of the most urgent questions facing cities and communities today.

Biennale Architettura 2027 is the twentieth edition of La Biennale di Venezia’s International Architecture Exhibition.

The main curated exhibition will be accompanied by National Participations presented in permanent pavilions at the Giardini, spaces at the Arsenale and independent venues across Venice.

Collateral Events will extend the program further into the city.

Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu approach the biennale through the idea of «doing» architecture.

Rather than beginning with spectacular forms or abstract theories, they emphasize physical contact with materials, landscape, existing buildings and local cultural practices.

The exhibition asks how architecture might create coexistence between elements that modern development has frequently treated as opposites: nature and construction, innovation and tradition, technology and craft, global knowledge and local practice.

Biennale Architettura 2027 in Venice – Complete Visitor Guide

Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu are known for incorporating materials recovered from demolished buildings into new architecture. This practice treats fragments of older structures not as waste but as carriers of local memory and building knowledge. That makes them particularly appropriate curators for an edition questioning whether contemporary architecture can combine innovation with existing materials, traditions and landscapes.

Dates:

8 May 2027 - 21 November 2027

Location:

Venice, Italy

Mission:

Biennale Architettura 2027 asks architecture to confront the environmental and social realities of the places in which it operates. The goal is not to reject technology or contemporary construction. Instead, the curators ask whether multiple approaches can coexist. Advanced systems might work alongside traditional knowledge. New buildings might incorporate old materials. International architectural thinking might remain sensitive to specific local cultures. This idea of coexistence provides the exhibition with a framework that is both architectural and political. It suggests that design decisions are never completely separated from questions of resources, history, labor and community.

Organizer:

Biennale Architettura is organized by La Biennale di Venezia. The 2027 International Architecture Exhibition is curated by Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu. The wider event includes the main international exhibition, National Participations, Biennale College Architettura, educational activities and officially recognized collateral projects.

Why attend to Biennale Architettura 2027 in Venice?

Architecture biennales are not only for architects.

The subjects they address — housing, cities, climate, public space, materials and the future of communities — affect everyone.

The Venice exhibition is especially useful because it brings together responses from many different cultural and geographic contexts.

Visitors can compare how similar problems are understood in countries facing completely different climates, economies and histories.

The setting also makes the event unique.

Historic warehouses, national pavilions, gardens and spaces throughout Venice become temporary laboratories for architectural ideas.

Getting There:

The main exhibition venues are located in eastern Venice.

The Giardini della Biennale can be reached by vaporetto or on foot from central Venice.

The Arsenale lies nearby, although the scale of the complex means visitors should allow significant time to move through it.

Venice Santa Lucia railway station provides direct rail connections with major Italian cities.

Visitors arriving through Venice Marco Polo Airport can continue into the historic center by bus, water transport, or private transfer.

Once inside Venice, walking and vaporetto services are the main forms of transport.

Accommodation

Castello is particularly convenient for visitors whose main purpose is the Biennale because it provides relatively easy access to both the Giardini and Arsenale.

San Marco offers a more central tourist location but can be significantly busier.

Cannaregio and Dorsoduro provide attractive alternatives with strong cultural character and good transport connections.

Accommodation prices rise sharply during major Biennale periods, especially around the pre-opening and opening weeks.

Booking early is strongly recommended.

History & Context of a Biennale Architettura 2027 in Venice

La Biennale di Venezia has organized international exhibitions since 1895.

Architecture gradually became an increasingly important part of its activities, and the first official International Architecture Exhibition was held in 1980.

Since then, the Architecture Biennale has become one of the discipline’s most influential global forums.

Unlike a trade fair, it does not primarily present products or commercial projects.

Instead, architects, researchers, artists, nations, and institutions use the event to explore broader questions about cities, housing, ecology, technology, and society.

The Giardini and Arsenale provide the historic core, while exhibitions spread throughout Venice make the city itself part of the experience.

Tips for Visitors of Biennale Architettura 2027 in Venice

Do not plan to see the entire biennale in one day.

Dedicate one day to the Giardini and another to the Arsenale.

A third day allows time for national presentations and collateral exhibitions elsewhere in Venice.

Wear comfortable shoes. The amount of walking is substantial.

Start early, especially during summer and major holiday periods.

Some installations contain video, sound or extensive research material, so simply walking through quickly can mean missing much of the exhibition.

Make a shortlist of national pavilions but leave room for unexpected discoveries.

Tips from the ArtExpoWorld

The Architecture Biennale works best when you stop expecting every pavilion to provide a simple answer.

Some exhibitions will feel practical. Others will be theoretical, political, poetic or deliberately difficult.

That variety is the point.

For 2027, pay particular attention to materials.

Look at what buildings are made from, what has been reused, what has been sourced locally and how different projects deal with the physical limits of land and resources.

Those details may reveal more about the theme than the architectural renderings themselves.

Editor’s Note

Architecture is often presented through perfect photographs and spectacular visualizations.

Biennale Architettura 2027 deliberately moves in a different direction.

Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu refocus attention on making: materials, hands, land, existing structures, and the physical reality in which architecture must endure.

For ArtExpoWorld, this gives Do Architecture a relevance far beyond the architectural profession.

The questions behind the exhibition — what should be preserved, what should be reused, and how modern life can coexist with local environments and cultural memory — are questions increasingly faced by cities everywhere.

Combined with Venice itself, where centuries of construction, adaptation, and reuse remain visible on almost every street, Biennale Architettura 2027 promises to be one of Europe’s major cultural events of the year.
