Who is speaking on behalf of the work? At many fairs the answer is the gallery, and that mediation can be valuable. At Supermarket, the answer may instead be a collective, a project space or artists who have organised the presentation themselves. The difference can change the conversation before you have even looked at the work. Stockholm’s independent fair returns on 22–25 April 2027, with a professional preview listed for 21 April.
Supermarket focuses on artist-run initiatives and independent exhibition structures. Its announced theme, Myths and Echoes, offers the public and editorial program a way to consider how stories change when retold. Exhibitors are invited to respond, but the organizer does not require a literal thematic response. The fair features performances and artist talks alongside the exhibition. Confirmed individual projects, their schedules, and any participation restrictions should be found in the final program.

Supermarket uses the fair format to present the activity of initiatives that do not all operate like commercial galleries. Some build programmes around long collaborations, temporary spaces, or exchanges with other artist groups. This makes a simple list of works a poor record of the fair. Ask what will happen when the initiative returns home. The answer can identify a continuing exhibition, publication, or way of organizing that makes sense of a single stand.
The 2027 theme is optional for exhibitors. That choice gives visitors two ways to see the fair: follow explicit responses to the circulation of myths, or notice where a work appears to resist the theme altogether. A project that does not use any recognizable myth may still show how a repeated image gains authority. Equally, a work full of mythic motifs may have less to say about repetition than the label suggests.
Save the name of the initiative as well as the artist, and note the city where it normally operates. If a presentation is collective, ask whether credit belongs to particular participants or is intentionally shared. For performances, note the date and time alongside the title; a repetition of the action may differ. If an object is offered for purchase, establish who is selling it and how collection is arranged rather than assuming the procedures of a gallery fair.

Does the installation make several positions readable or turn the collective into a single brand? A performance may pose the same question through time. Watch how instructions move from one person to another, or how someone who initially seems to be a spectator becomes involved. If you are uncertain whether participation is expected, ask before stepping in. The limits of an invitation can be as revealing as the parts of it that are explicitly open. The fair also identifies a separate call for performances. A listed exhibitor should therefore not be taken as a confirmed performer; use the programme for the specific action you want to see.

Independence is a condition of creating work, not an automatic aesthetic achievement. We would look for the point where an initiative’s way of organizing becomes visible in the display: in who sets the terms of a conversation, how much space an action is allowed, and whether the presentation still makes sense when nobody is there to explain it. Myths and Echoes will be most useful if it allows disagreements. Repeating a story can keep something alive or reduce a complex experience to a slogan. A good work should let visitors observe the difference rather than asking them to endorse a theme in advance. Our preferred visit would include one extended conversation and one action seen from beginning to end. That is enough to learn more about the fair’s proposition than a rushed circuit could. It also gives an unfamiliar project time to establish the terms on which it should be judged.
