Mika Ninagawa with EiM brings Alive with Shadows to the Grand Palais from 16 December 2026 to 21 March 2027. Photography, moving images, and installation extend her saturated visual language into space. The Paris exhibition is curated by Lena Fritsch, with exhibition design by Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects.

Flowers and intense color may be the immediate attraction, but the title points to a less comfortable subject. Beauty can captivate the eye precisely because it does not last. The exhibition places that tension within environments a visitor moves through, where an image is experienced alongside changing light and physical surroundings.

Ninagawa's work moves between still photographs, cinema and installation. With EiM, the image becomes one component in a larger environment. Light and spatial arrangement affect what a visitor notices and how long an impression lasts.

EiM means Eternity in a Moment. Founded in 2022 by Ninagawa and collaborators including scientist and artistic director Hiroaki Miyata, the team brings different kinds of expertise to each project. The collaboration helps explain why this presentation should be approached as an authored environment rather than a sequence of enlarged photographs.

The announced Paris concept links visual abundance to impermanence. That relationship can be read in the recurring floral imagery: the attraction of a bloom carries knowledge of its disappearance. The question for the exhibition is how a moving, spatial experience gives that idea a different force from a still image. The exact sequence of the rooms remains something to discover on site.

Why attend to Mika Ninagawa 2026/2027?

Alive with Shadows is a strong candidate for visitors interested in how photography crosses into installation. A still photograph fixes a frame; an environment allows the viewer's position and attention to change. That difference makes the exhibition relevant to readers who already know Ninagawa's images as well as those encountering her work for the first time.

It also offers a useful counterpoint to the Grand Palais's painting programme. A work seen within a frame and an image encountered as part of a room demand different kinds of attention. Our selection of art exhibitions in France in December 2026 sets the exhibition alongside Cezanne and other Paris presentations, with the opening dates kept distinct. Ninagawa's show becomes available in the second half of the month.

History & Context of a Mika Ninagawa 2026/2027

The collective format also directs attention towards the construction of atmosphere. Lighting and spatial design are artistic decisions with consequences for how an image is experienced, rather than neutral supports around it.

Ninagawa has built a practice across photography, films, and installations, while EiM develops projects through collaboration. Her earlier French appearances include Florae in 2021, participation at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2024, and an invitation to Normandie Impressionniste in 2026.

Those contexts show a practice extending across different exhibition settings. They do not establish the content of the Paris rooms, but they help place the Grand Palais project within a longer investigation of how an image reaches its audience. Alive with Shadows adds a new institutional setting to that work rather than starting a visual language from scratch.

Tips for Visitors of Mika Ninagawa 2026/2027

Let the first impression settle before taking a photograph, wherever photography is permitted. Observe which parts of a space continue to draw attention once the strongest color has registered. A room can create an effect that a single image only partially preserves.

The Grand Palais offers a French-language guided tour lasting ninety minutes and a separate one-hour family tour for ages seven to sixteen. These are booked activities, separate from a timed admission ticket. Choose the format that suits your group and allow time between independently booked exhibitions.

For holiday visits, remember the early closing at 18:00 on December 24 and 31, and the closure on December 25. A special opening is announced for January 1. The exact entry time matters when combining the exhibition with travel or another museum booking; a general date range does not override these exceptions.

Tips from the ArtExpoWorld

Approach a space without immediately trying to summarize it. Notice whether its mood changes after a few minutes and whether movement alters the relationship between its images. That brief pause gives the work a chance to become more than its most photogenic moment.

Editor’s Note

We are interested in Ninagawa's Paris exhibition because visual pleasure is allowed to carry a difficult subject. Intense color and flowers do not have to make an artwork superficial; they can make the awareness of loss more acute. The relationship between that attraction and the title Alive with Shadows is what gives the announced project its editorial interest for us.

Immersive exhibitions are often judged by the image they leave on a phone. We would judge this one by what changes after the initial spectacle: whether the spaces complicate the beauty that draws people in. That is a demanding test, and the collaboration with EiM gives the project a credible formal basis for attempting it. We want to see how the Paris rooms sustain the tension.
