Lahore Biennale 04 starts with a challenging word: coexistence. The title suggests that coexistence might have a form, something created by the way bodies, objects, and institutions share a space together. The fourth Lahore Biennale, curated by Nav Haq, runs from 27 March to 25 April 2027. Its program is presented as a series of new commissions, installations, and discussions across civic, historical, and public settings.

The Shape of Coexistence is a biennial, not a gallery sales fair. The Lahore Biennale Foundation has announced an exhibition and discursive programme across the city. The 14th General Assembly and a Regional Meeting of the International Biennial Association are scheduled for 27–31 March, during the opening days. That professional activity is part of the context, but its dates do not define the duration of the exhibition or automatically confer public access to the meetings.

Lahore Biennale 2027: Dates, Tickets & Visitor Guide

Dates:

27 March 2027 - 25 April 2027

Location:

27 March–25 April 2027 in Lahore, Pakistan. Organizer: Lahore Biennale Foundation. Curator: Nav Haq. The opening-week association meetings run 27–31 March. The final venue-by-venue list, hours and access instructions should be consulted before travel. Do not assume all sites share the same opening day, entry conditions, closing time or facilities. Earlier biennial locations should not be published as the addresses of new commissions without an edition-specific listing.

Mission:

The biennial makes room for contemporary artists to work with the conditions of a city rather than asking a single hall to represent it. Its purpose becomes visible when a commission draws attention to the uses of a site, the history of who has been able to speak there, or the competing accounts that a public place can hold. Readers should look for the specific encounter through which such a claim is made. A venue’s importance in the city does not, on its own, explain the work shown inside it.

Organizer:

Lahore Biennale Foundation. Curator: Nav Haq.

Why attend to Lahore Biennale 2027?

This edition is a reason to see how contemporary art behaves in places with existing audiences and functions. A work displayed in a building already used by a community must contend with routines and expectations that an exhibition space can often set aside. Attend for the quality of that encounter, allowing enough time to observe how visitors move through it. The opening week may attract those following institutional debates; a later visit can offer more time for the exhibition itself.

Ticket Information

General admission costs

No blanket 2027 price or free-entry claim is made here. Use the enquiry form to check visitor arrangements once the site list and timetable are released. General Assembly or Regional Meeting attendance may require a different credential from an exhibition visit. Verify the rules for each event, including photography, identification requirements if applicable, and entry to a historical or civic site. A public commission and a scheduled talk may have little in common as practical visits.

Getting There:

Make a venue cluster before choosing a base. Plan one main site and a second nearby stop on the first day, then adjust to the actual times you spend at each place. Allow a separate transfer from Allama Iqbal International Airport and use precise addresses for onward travel. Bookings should leave room for the final programme to alter the most convenient base. If an artwork depends on outdoor light or access to a particular room, timing matters more than distance on a map. Confirm step-free entrances and accessible facilities separately for each site.

History & Context of a Lahore Biennale 2027

The foundation identifies John Tain’s Of Mountains and Seas as the preceding edition. Nav Haq’s curatorial appointment and the new theme provide meaningful points of comparison for 2027; the earlier installations and site list serve as historical evidence. The title of the current edition will gain a more precise meaning once the works are announced. For a regional comparison, the Sharjah Biennial 2027 guide offers another approach to an exhibition distributed across multiple locations, with its own dates and routes.

Interesting Fact

The opening meetings take place in 2027, eighty years after independence and the 1947 Partition. The foundation explicitly notes this historical context for the gathering. This makes it important to distinguish the historical anniversary from the subjects of individual artworks: the dates heighten the significance of gathering in Lahore, but they do not imply that every commission represents the same history. A visitor can ask what each work enables one to say about a place without requiring it to stand for an entire region.

Tips for Visitors of Lahore Biennale 2027

Check whether a work can be understood without attending an accompanying event, then leave room in the schedule to return if the context changes your first impression. Record both the artist and the site: an installation can lose crucial meaning when described without its surroundings. If you hear a discussion about a community or building, notice whose account is being presented and what a different account might add. For a first trip, a small route with one longer stay is more workable than a list of every announced location.

Poetry as a second route into the edition

The foundation has also announced that Conference of the Stray Birds will present its inaugural collection of poems in the biennial context. That gives a visitor another way to approach the theme. A text can address more than one place without setting up a permanent object in any of them; it also depends on the languages through which it reaches readers. Look for the form in which the collection is presented before assuming there will be a public reading at a particular hour. If a reading is announced, allow it to be a primary stop. Listening to a text in company can reveal different questions from reading the same words privately, particularly where translation or a second voice is part of the occasion. The project looks back to internationalist writers’ meetings across Eurasia. An especially useful question for the visitor is what survives when the meeting becomes a collection: a record of agreement, an exchange across languages, or evidence that the participants understood the gathering differently.

Editor’s Note

We are drawn to the challenge of the title. Coexistence can sound like a pleasant outcome that an exhibition promises in advance. What makes it useful as a curatorial problem is the possibility that two groups may share a place while understanding its history or its obligations differently. A work that gives those differences a form can do more than a display that insists on harmony. The site selection will be central to that test. We would look for projects in which the building or public setting changes what can be heard and who gets to answer. A prestigious site can dominate a commission; it can also offer the artist something exact to interrupt. The relationship has to be judged case by case. Our advice is to reserve time for one place where the biennial asks something difficult of the visitor. Return at another hour if access allows. The most persuasive account of a city may emerge from the small changes in how a place is used, rather than from the most spectacular object installed there.
