A vessel can be so accomplished that technique is the first thing you notice and the last thing you remember. Collect is worth visiting for the moment when the two diverge. The way a ceramic wall supports its weight, the tension of a fiber, or the join between different materials can make a piece impossible to understand through a photograph alone. The Crafts Council’s fair opens publicly at Somerset House on 26–28 February 2027, after two invitation-only preview days.

Collect specialises in contemporary craft and collectible design. It gives the material and method of a work unusual prominence in a fair setting. Galleries and specialist exhibitors can place a finished object beside other examples of an artist’s practice. Visitors can then follow the decisions that make the object distinct. Final participants, individual commissions and the timetable for talks should be checked as the 2027 listings are published. Older exhibitor pages describe earlier editions, even when they appear alongside current announcements.

Collect London 2027 Event Overview

Collect London 2027: Dates, Tickets & Visitor Guide

Dates:

24 February 2027 - 25 February 2027

Location:

Somerset House, Strand, London.

Mission:

The fair creates a public and commercial space for contemporary craft. Its greatest strength is allowing visitors to view craft as a form of thinking: a piece can explore what a material can endure, what qualifies as a useful object, or what occurs when technical knowledge is transmitted and reinterpreted. Consider whether the method affects the finished work that you can see or describe. The answer provides a more solid foundation than a general statement about craftsmanship.

Why attend to Collect London 2027?

Collect makes close inspection useful even if you have no intention of buying. Look at the edge, base or join that a photograph tends to crop away. A subtly altered profile can change the sense of weight; an irregular glaze can make it difficult to locate the boundary between deliberate decision and the behaviour of the kiln. When a dealer can describe that uncertainty rather than erase it from the explanation, you learn something about how the artist works.

Ticket Information

General admission costs

The organizer publishes the 2027 visiting hours but says tickets are coming soon. No 2027 tariff is stated here. Keep preview invitations separate from general admission and check the conditions for any timed programme. Use the enquiry form to request current access information. Somerset House has a number of entrances and internal routes; visitors who need an accessible circuit through particular rooms should establish that route before arriving rather than rely on a general venue description.

Getting There:

Somerset House fronts the Strand and lies near the river. Temple is a useful Underground orientation point; visitors coming via Waterloo should check their preferred crossing and the onward walk. Choose the route according to the entrance used for the fair, and allow time to find the first room. A central base can simplify visits to other institutions, while accommodation on a direct line can work equally well if you are attending one session. If a purchase is likely, confirm collection or delivery before making your onward journey part of the same afternoon.

History & Context of a Collect London 2027

The Crafts Council’s fair has helped give contemporary craft a dedicated context within London’s wider exhibition and collecting calendar. Somerset House places objects in rooms with different proportions rather than one uninterrupted floor. Use that setting as part of the visit: a large installation can be perceived differently across a threshold, and a small piece may invite the viewer to approach it at a different pace. Look for where the relationship between the object and the room seems intentional.

Interesting Fact

The published 2027 opening plan reserves two invitation-only afternoons and evenings before general admission. The public Friday still runs until 21:00, three hours later than the Sunday closing time. That detail affects the kind of visit you can make. A Friday visitor can give a particular medium a first circuit, take a break, and return; a late Sunday visitor has less opportunity to change their route once the work begins to lead them in an unexpected direction.

Tips for Visitors of Collect London 2027

Ask whether the object is unique, part of a numbered edition, or a variation that the artist produces over time. In craft, two pieces may share the same process while changing considerably through firing, carving, or assembly. Note dimensions including the base or projecting elements, and ask the seller how a fragile object is supported and packed. If it is intended to be used, request explicit care instructions. Neither a familiar shape nor an accomplished finish proves that a work can tolerate everyday use.

Planning a second London fair

Our London art fairs from January to March 2027 comparison places Collect between the modern and contemporary gallery programme in Islington and the spring market in Battersea. If you want to follow changes in the way material is explained, continue with Affordable Art Fair Battersea Spring 2027, opening its edition window on 3 March. The two locations and admission timetables are separate.

Looking beyond the front of the object

Take a little time to compare the part of an object that faces the room with the part that carries its load. The underside of a vessel, the back of a textile, and the contact points of a sculptural piece often tell a different story from the photographed front. Never handle a work without asking. A presenter may be able to show you an image of a reverse or explain a support you cannot see. Those details are not merely technical trivia. They can tell you whether a visible irregularity is a structural compromise, a deliberate decision, or simply a result of how the work is installed.

Editor’s Note

The language around craft can become too reverential. Difficulty is visible in a remarkable object, but difficulty alone does not make it compelling. We look for a piece in which skill allows a precarious form, a surprising relationship between materials, or an unfamiliar way of holding the viewer’s attention. Equally, we are wary of treating function as something a serious object must escape. A vessel may have something to say precisely because it retains an opening, a lip, or a handle. Those features carry expectations about weight and touch. The artist can work with them or interfere with them, and the result can make a long-familiar object difficult to take for granted. Collect’s specialist format makes such differences discussable. Our recommendation is to choose one medium at the start, then find a work that makes you reconsider your reasons for favouring it. An excellent fair visit can end with a more complicated preference than the one you arrived with.
