History of Art Paris 2026

🌱 1999–2009: The Radical Underdog

  • 1999: Founded by Guillaume Piens (ex-FIAC director) as a counterpoint to elitist art fairs.
  • Debuted at Porte de Versailles Hall 3 with just 60 "outsider" galleries:
  • Algeria’s Azz Art (banned at FIAC for political art).
  • Tunisian pioneer Selma Feriani.
  • Parisian disruptor Kamel Mennour.
  • Scandal ignited: Artist Jean-Luc Vernet hung a banner: "FIAC = Factory of Conformism". Critics dubbed it a "salon for rejects".
  • 2005: Moved to Grand Palais – a peace offering to the establishment, but demanded 30% booths for African/Asian galleries.
  • 2007: First major breakthrough: €500K sale of Malian artist Malika Agueznay’s painting – later acquired by the Louvre.

⚡ 2010–2015: Protest Art & Global Awakening

  • 2010: Arab Spring response: Launched "Art of Revolutions" – featuring Cairo/Tunis street art smuggled out in diplomatic bags.
  • 2013: Decentralization revolution:
  • Partnered with Parisian banlieues (suburbs) – murals in Saint-Denis with JR.
  • Free shuttles for 5,000+ schoolchildren from marginalized communities.
  • 2015: Charlie Hebdo attacks: Transformed into a symbol of unity:
  • "Je Suis Charlie" installation: 137 artists created works in 48 hours.
  • Projected controversial cartoons onto Grand Palais – defending free speech.

🦠 2020–2024: Pandemic Pivot & Ethical Reinvention

  • 2020: Drive-thru art along the Périphérique:
  • Collectors picked up artworks from car trunks like takeout 🚗🎨.
  • Virtual tours with Google Arts & Culture attracted 250k+ online visitors.
  • 2022: Rebranded as Art Paris – shifted focus to the Global South:
